About TWJ

What’s this all about, and why now?
In summary – The Wildflower Journal, or TWJ, is a creative outlet doubling as a journalism portfolio for a BJTC-accredited journalist (me, Wildflower) trying to make her way into the industry.

Sadly, my university’s student news website has now been deactivated. The entire site was managed, edited, and written for by journalism students, and the journalism course no longer exists at the university. This means that the majority of my online journalism also no longer exists, given I didn’t have the foresight to back it up before the site was taken down…
Rookie error – now I’m trying to make up for it!

I used to have a blog a few years ago, but I put it on what I anticipated to be a short hiatus… and then March 2020 happened. Since COVID kicked in, my priorities became scrambled, my mental health took a nosedive, and overall it became a challenge to write anything that wasn’t because I had to for a grade.

Why are you called Wildflower?
My pen name for the time being is Wildflower, though if you’re reading this at this stage in the game, you probably know who I actually am.
Going by Wildflower allows me more freedom of creative expression than using my real name – I feel that using my name creates a sense of pressure to conform with what today’s media society expects, which I don’t want to be restricted to on this platform.

What’s the theme of the blog?
The Wildflower Journal as a concept doesn’t have a niche as such, as it acts as a personal blog combined with an entertainment website.
You can expect to find opinion pieces, quick reads, long-form features, and maybe even an interview or two in the coming uploads.

What can I expect from visiting this site?
As I mentioned in the site’s first ever upload, I won’t be setting expectations here. I, the writer behind all this, have a diagnosis of autism and ADHD, which means I may be more likely to experience creative burnout or overwhelm. Not forcing myself to meet deadlines will allow me to produce the most genuine and thoughtful content I can, rather than churning articles out to meet deadlines and ending up resenting the whole process – the complete antithesis of the project!

Thank you in advance for bearing with me, and for reading either half an article or everything I’ve uploaded. Every read means a great deal to me.

Happy scrolling!
